The creators of Geek Portal are now proud owners of a replica Zelda master sword and shield (from Twilight Princess to be exact). Why? Well we ended up going to the Wizard’s World Comiccon that’s why! Firstly, if you have never been to a comiccon, please go… for the love of all that is good in this world… go. It’s an experience you will never forget, and this years 2012 Wizard’s World Comiccon did not disappoint.

We enjoyed speaking to everyone… guests and vendors alike. The general consensus from vendors was that they were able to speak more to the general public, they had larger and roomier spaces than other conventions, the cost was affordable, and they were doing good business. These are all plusses if one ever wants to be in a convention. Remember: Happy Vendors = Happier Customers. People who went to the Comiccon were able to have more intimate and personalized conversations with the vendors, artists, and the special guests. We found that in most conventions, this isn’t the case. Wizard’s World provided us with a brand new experience for comiccons, and we hope that it continues in years to come.

A lot of events, such as the Pokemon Card Championships and Jedi Training Area seemed geared more to children, so we saw a much younger age range here than other conventions. Seminars were small and intimate, allowing people to actually get in to seminars they want to see and to speak directly to their favorite guests. The costume contest was amazing, although we unfortunately did not get to see it. Luckily, one of our fans sent us the video of her husband winning it as Ironman (http://youtu.be/TPC8DVbyfUA). We enjoyed how friendly everyone was. The people working and volunteering for Wizard’s World were really fantastic and very helpful when we had questions.

The one and only disappointment we had was how early the comiccon vendors packed up on Sunday. Saturday’s turnout seemed much larger and the day was much longer, as opposed to Sunday’s, which had less people and there were numerous vendor areas completely empty. Wizard’s World Comiccon is a 2 day long convention… not the typical norm in Toronto as Fanexpo & Anime North are 3 to 4 day events. We think that rules might be implemented to make sure vendor/artists don’t skip out or abandon their spaces early. We ourselves were disappointed at the amount of empty spaces on Sunday, and were debating jumping behind the table and setting ourselves up… of course we didn’t as it would be undignified… but boy, we thought about it.

Some of our personal highlights included:
- Rhonda (the master crafter of the Predator & Alien suits – VIP guest walking around)
- The Doctor Who Society and their robot Dalek
- Sick on Sin vendor with her amazingly cute t-shirt designs
- D.A. Bishops Stranger Comics (www.iheartunicornstoo.com). Fantastic comic and creators!
- Jim (Big City Comics – Writer of Terminal Alice & Whore)
- The Underground Cinema booth (extremely informative and do you know they have a nintendo-themed burleque coming up?)
- And of course.. all the amazing other guests that showed up in costumes!
Our consensus is that the Wizard’s World Comiccon was definitely enjoyable for everyone, and one we can’t wait to see next year!
